Markings 106 - Easter Sunday
EASTER SUNDAY
'Christ the Lord is risen today!'
Charles Wesley
The morning
one dove between the sun
and old church wall
prints shadow on the garden
more than shadow
claws down a line on stone
sharply divided
between dark and light
that is not there
somewhere inside
an organ
blows and thumps
the congregation
strains towards an empty space
not being there
now
as once
words bite at my tongue
for tune
I shake my leaf-rake
at the pile that sticks
and hurts
garden is a stopped wing
a pigeon clamours
at the iron roof
song the same
rails at death
hesitates
falls between the sun
and old church wall
risen with shadow
from its wings
prints on the garden
all I know
and cannot know.
